16 July 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 16th [July 1904]. An excessively hot day. I finished my copy of the Cima– Typed—worked—read. Today is the eve of the fête of the Redentore—the old Venetian fête. The temporary bridges are up across the Grand Canal & across the Giudecca to the Church of the Redentore. Prof. Malagola came to dine with me at 7.30 & afterwards we took the Css Brandolin & her school boy Carlino out in gondola to see the fête. My gondoliers had done up my gondola very smartly with green bows & coloured lanterns—red, white & blue (the English colours) & we looked very smart & festive. We had agreed to meet the Curtis in their gondola near the Salute & soon found them. We floated together for the whole evening—listening to the band on the galleggiante—& then seeing the fireworks which were really very fine. They went on from 10 to 11—afterwards the Curtis went home—& we proceeded to tie up our gondola & have supper. There were thousands of gondolas & boats with the populace most of them arranged with a table in the centre & supper ready prepared– The fireworks over—all supped & sang– The sight was charming & all seemed happy & well behaved– We returned home soon after 12– Margherita Brandolin had gone with her sister in law to a supper on the Lido wh they were to have on the terrace of an hotel at 2.30—a large company of them including “La Morosini.” It was a very hot night 82º in my room when I returned home after midnight.
