22 July 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 22nd [July 1904]. Mr & Mrs Curtis came to see me in the morng & came up to my studio. About 5 o’cl I went out called on Mr Harston & then went on to the hospital & so home to dinner. Great excitement at the confiscation by Russia of the P&O steamer “Malacca” in the Persian Gulf. Had on board ammunition belonging to our Govt marked with broad anchor for our fleet in the far East. He have demanded instant restitution– The telegrams in the Italian papers are of keenest interest. The aggravation of the whole matter being that the Russian ship that did the deed passed the Bosphorus & Dardanelles under the commercial flag—being a ship of war it was a lie. The Genl had agreed to fetch me in the evening for a float—but a storm menaced & he had to give it up.
