23 July 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 23rd [July 1904]. Rather cooler today– Had the hair dresser to wash my hair wh is a signal for many interruptions & visits. Mr Harston called & I showed him Mr Montalba’s accounts. He seemed struck at the smallness of the sum collected. I told him, whatever happened I thought Mr Montalba had done the management of things well & had had the sanction of the last Bishop & any change must go through the present Bishop– Desideri called– At 5 the Genl sent to fetch me in his gondola & I returned for him at the Semitecolo & we rowed to the Eden’s garden. I took Henry’s autobiography with me & read aloud to him in the garden on the terrace overlooking the Lagune till nearly 8 when we returned home. At 10 Mr Kennedy arrived from Montenegro where he is Minister to pay me a visit. He is there without his family having after 8 years there, failed to get moved– He has returned there to work out a few months in order to earn his full pension. We sat in Belvedere an hour talking till bed time.
