28 July 1904 — Belluno
Thursday. 28th [July 1904]. Began reading Dante according to my wont when I come up into the country & am quiet. Mr Kennedy & I set out for a morning walk abt 10 but were driven back to the Hotel by showers—thundery weather. Lunch at 12– Afterwards read till after 4 & then Mr Kennedy & I set off for a walk. On the road to Salce we met the Edens driving. We had a chat & promised to go to tea with them tomorrow—then continued our walk on the slopes of the hills & got back to the hotel by 7 o’cl dinner. Took a stroll in the town in the evening. Mr K. much preoccupied at a telegram from his wife speaking of many changes in diplomacy. He is in hopes of an offer of a better post. Telegrams from the war disquieting– More vessels seized by the Russians who are daily also beaten by the Japanese– Anxious times.
