26 August 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 26th [August 1904]. Reading in the Venetian paper that the Royal Greek yacht “Amphitrite” was here, I went off at 9.30 to call on Princess Sophie. I found her just going out with P. Constantine her husband. They have all their children on board—very nice & well behaved—a big boy of about 15 & a baby born since they were here last year—5 children—with English nurses & governess & a German tutor. I went off at once in gondola with the Princess to antiquity shops & then we went to the Eden’s garden—& to the Cos: Hospital of wh the Princess is one of the Patronesses. Found all going well—but only 1 patient. The weather today more settled & a little warmer. I went back & lunched on board the Amphitrite– A long table & all the officers at lunch. There was a table with hors d’oeuvres in the Russian fashion before we sat down to lunch. I came home afterwards stopping on the way to ask Mr Curtis to send me a teapot & silver spoons as the P. & Pss were coming to tea with me. However, on getting home I found Alessandro had arrived from Florence where he had gone a holiday & had brought the keys of the silver & so I was able to give the Royalties a properly served tea when they came at 3.30. Pasquale also turned up grapes cut from the vine growing at our front door. I went to dine with the Curtis & there met the General de Horsey in the evening.
