2 September 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 2nd [September 1904]. I had a visit from Mr & Mrs & Miss Ady in the morning. Mrs Ady (née Cartwright) is the authoress of the delightful lives of Isabella & Beatrice d’Este– She is sister to the Mr Cartwright who was secretary at Consple. under Henry & is now chief clerk at the F.O. She is a square short rather plain dark little woman but with a quick manner & in iridescent eyes. Her daughter is dark & nice looking & has taken a degree in history at Oxford– The father an ordinary looking person is, I believe a clergyman tho’ one would not have known it by his dress. Mrs Ady is also a good art critic & has written a life of Botticelli. I referred to the pleasure her books gave us all she said these & all had been a surprise to her & also to her publisher (Murray). We had a great thunderstorm abt 3 o’cl with a good deal of hail. I was invited to go to tea with the Bp of Ely & Lady Alwyne & I did not get there till past 5. Malagola came to see me & accompanied me in gondola to their door. Met there the Curtis who were interested in hearing of Mrs Ady so I promised to invite her to meet them on Sunday to tea. I took Lady Alwyne to see the sailor’s Institute & then came home.
