22 September 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 22nd [September 1904]. Kate & I went out in the morning to call for Mr Brooke & to go with him to the Ducal Palace. He had offered to explain to us Tintoretto’s picture of the Paradise wh I had told him was to me all a confusion. He maintains that the subject is very carefully & skilfully worked out—& after I had looked at it with him & had it explained by him it entirely disentangled itself, & I could see how the painter had represented on the right the persons of the new Testament & on the left those of the old. How the lower part is divided from the upper by an arch of clouds & all culminates in the central figure of Christ in glory. I dont think it will ever seem confused to me again. The great picture wh was taken down from the wall & has been returned still stands on an easel in front of the big window in a very good light. After the fall of the campanile the walls of the Ducal Palace were examined & the pictures removed—behind this one many cracks were found & also the remains of the old fresco by Guariente wh had been destroyed by the fire that took place.
