24 September 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 24th [September 1904]. I hired a launch & took the whole party staying with me & Mr Stopford Brooke & Evelyn and Signor Malagola to S. Francesco in Deserto. We started at 2. The day was fine—the boat was a small one for our party—10 of us—& we had to sit very still. We went nearly to Mazzorbo & then our engineer said he did not know his way. We turned back twice & at last got stuck in a shallow. However at last we got there & penetrated into the convent. It being clausura the ladies were only allowed into the 1st cloister—where we waited. The Prior received the party civilly—& excused himself for not letting in the ladies. He opened his eyes when I told him I had been in—with the Empress Frederick– We walked round the avenue of cypresses & made our tea on the bank with a lovely view of Burano. A storm threatened & a few drops fell—but it cleared & we got home dry. Mr Stopford Brooke is especially attached to S. Francesco & enjoyed the afternoon.
