25 September 1904 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 25th [September 1904]. Coming out of morning service I found Lord Goschen & 2 of his girls who are here for a few days—also Sir Henry & Lady Maxwell Lyte. I invited them all to come to my house to see the regatta in the afternoon—which they gladly accepted. It was a popular fête & there were many boats & gondolas out. It was a tremendous & striking contrast to last Sunday– The revolution seems entirely forgotten! This regatta is got up by the hotel keepers &c & is not an official one such as I have seen in former years. In the interval of waiting for the end of the race I gave my friends tea—the Stopford Brookes, Malagolas & Humphrey Johnstone were here. Unfortunately the rain came down at about 6 & the “passigiata” would not take place nor the fireworks either.
