13 October 1904 — Trieste
Thursday. 13th [October 1904]. Left by the “Graf Wurmbrand” at 8.30. A splendid passage—not a ripple but not much sunshine. The ship was pretty full. I got a 3 berth cabin between Baker & self & was very comfortable tho’ the cabins might have been cleaner. We had “dinner” at 11—very good food– We put in to Pola but had not time to land there as the steamer only stayed to take in the posts. At Zara where next we stopped we had time to run out & look at the outside of an interesting church– The town is like a Venetian one—narrow paved streets & high houses & no horses or carts. We bought a bottle of the famous maraschino– All along the coast are pretty villages & towns with a very Italian look having all Campaniles like the Venice ones. The back ground is grey rock & is very wild looking. We supped at 7.30 & went early to rest– Many of the travellers got out at the towns at wh we stopped & a few others came on– There were a good many Austrian officers. At Pola we saw the Austrian ships & Arsenal—it is a busy place Austria’s only Arsenal.
