23 January 1905 — Maiden Bradley House, Maiden Bradley, Wiltshire
Monday. 23rd [January 1905]. The gentlemen went out shooting. The papers brought us most appalling news of a revolution in Russia. The mob & strikers went in procession to the Palace to demand liberty & more wages of the Czar and were fired upon by the troops under the orders of the Grand Dukes—& it is said 2000 people were killed. We were all in a state of consternation. It is too horrible & the Czar has proved himself a coward & brute in not showing himself to his people & ordering them to be fired upon ruthlessly. We could scarce talk of anything else.
