22 June 1905 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 22nd [June 1905]. I went off in gondola at 9 to the Cos: Hospital to meet there Sigr Mattei the Engineer & to talk over the advisability of buying the cottage offered us by Miss Holland for £250. We also went over the cottages I bought last autumn close by to see how they might be adapted for use. Mattei advised our accepting Miss Holland’s offer so we went over the way to the Eden garden & talked it over with Mr Eden & decided it, we to give £600 for the house & garden—& 6000 lire for the cottage. I dropped Sr Mattei at his house at S. Gregorio & went home– Ola had asked me to type out for her her testimonials & this I did for her & it took me 2 hours to do. After tea I went out & left cards not finding any of my friends at home. I came back abt 6 & found at my door Princess S. Elia who came in sat some time with me & was very pleasant. She said the Q. mother had been struck with the sad position of the children kept at the Civil Hospital—so sad & uncheered. It quite agreed that they ought not to be kept there. After dinner I went to fetch Ola & Sister Rome & the dog Biondina for an hour’s airing. It was very hot & a hot wind was blowing.
