4 September 1905 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 4th [September 1905]. We breakfasted in the sala together at 9. The young people went sight seeing till lunch time. Mr Alec Hood lunched with us– I met him yesterday on the Piazza & asked him. He seems to have grown irritable & old maidish & argumentative– Vere & L.R. went off to visit Lady Helen Vincent who is here now. Mr Browning came to tea & remained on a long time telling me of his trouble about his wife. He would like her to return to him—& after much circumvention let out that he would like me to have another try to get her to do so—they have never had a real quarrel & this time she left him suddenly for no reason. I said I would see what I could do if he wrote me a letter asking me to do so. The young people had got tired of waiting for me & went off to the Piazza where I promised to meet them. On getting there they were nowhere to be seen & after waiting a long time they appeared, having been to pay Lady Charles a visit on board the “Surprise.” We started off in gondola for the Lido abt 7. There was a lovely afterglow of the sunset & it was a lovely warm night. We rowed to the Lido very quickly & walked across to the Baths terrace where we dined– A great dinner was going on of the Alpine Club inside the hall—speechifying & applauding. We left in our gondola at 10. Lovely row home.
