5 September 1905 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 5th [September 1905]. The young people left Venice by 8.20 train. I breakfasted in my own room & wrote in the library all morning. Mr Montalba called on his way from Feltre where his sisters & mother are, to London. Ola came to lunch. Hilda Montalba came in just as we were going out at 4 & we took her with us & left her at the Academia & we went on to the Piazza to enquire at Cooks about my best way to join the “Egypt” whether to go to Marseilles or to Port Said from here. We went on to tea with Genl de Horsey who has got a new house in the Calle Catecumani. He had lived for many years in the Ca’ Simeone Piccolo on the Gd Canal. It is rather pathetic that the poor old gentleman, nearly blind & with only one arm should have to arrange a new house. He is so brave about it & good humoured that it is quite a lesson in patience. The tea was served in pretty old Venice china cups & the rooms are nicely arranged with old furniture– On leaving him we went over to the hospital where I left Ola & came home. Dined at 8 & to bed at 10.
