10 September 1905 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 10th [September 1905]. Went to morning church. Mr Seale preached a good sermon on contentment with one’s lot. I lunched with Lady Helen Vincent & met Hon. Mrs Maguire. Her husband was kept to his room by a rheumatic leg but his wife asked me to go & see him & sit with him a bit wh I did & he told me much about the East & gave me his ideas on the Russo-Japanese peace. He thinks the Japs were well nigh exhausted & could not have struck any other great blow this winter. I came home at 3. Sister Rome brought her invalid sister to tea with me at 4.30. At 7 I took Baker in gondola by the Grand Canal to the Sailor’s Institute for the evening service. There was a large attendance. Mr Seale gave an address. Dr van Someren read the lesson. I left them all singing Moody & Sankey hymns & walked home with Baker & got my dinner at 9—& early to bed.
