21 September 1905 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 21st [September 1905]. The Congress was opened at the Ducal Palace. As the weather was threatening I did not dare go but Sir Wm took Monty to it abt 9 o’cl . Sir Wm is wonderfully youthful—enjoys himself & wears out his strength no longer being young. He is still wonderfully good looking of a Jewish type one that the old masters took when painting a head of Christ. He told me later that he has Jewish blood in his veins. He wears his rather crisp hair long & a pointed beard with a small moustache. At 2 o’clock we went to the Ducal Palace to hear Mr Seziranne’s paper on John Ruskin. The King & Q. were there. The meeting was held in the Sala dei Pregadi & it was interesting to see the King of Italy sitting in the place of the former Doges. We were unfortunate in not hearing a word of the discourse & were glad when it was over.
