19 October 1905 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 19th [October 1905]. The Baroness went out shopping. I had a visit from M. & Mme Henri Monod. She is a comfortable rather plain American no longer young. Very enthusiastic and appreciative. Besides the pictures M. Monod talked much of books & is making researches on Huguenots in the Archives here. I gave him some of Henry’s pamphlets on the subject & showed him the library here & also the books I & my brothers & sisters had printed in our youth. I spent a pleasant morning with him & his wife & Malagola who joined us. After lunch I took Baroness Kuhn out in gondola. In the evening I was called to the telephone by Ola saying the hospital was on fire & asking me to send my servant wh I did at once. She said she had sent for the firemen close by & before I went down to dinner she telephoned to say it was all right. The stove wh had been put in to a room by clumsy Venetian workmen too close to a wooden partition had ignited it & luckily smoke was seen coming thro the keyhole. I took leave on going to bed, of my guest who starts off to Milan tomorrow morning early.
