27 October 1905 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 27th October [1905]. Got dressed early & found magnificent weather. A great relief after the late storm. At 9 was in the studio & shortly after Dr Candiani arrived—the notary with the deed of sale of the house in the Giudecca for the Cosmopolitan Hospital. Miss Holland came soon after & the deed was signed & witnessed & I paid over the 15,000 lire for it (£600) for which Miss Holland had agreed to sell it for the use of the hospital. It was a relief to have the matter at last settled. We divided the expenses between us 1000 lire—& then the notary left. He is quite a character, a good man & very “clericale.” Miss Montalba came directly after & then Signor Guggenheim—also Prof. Mattei the ingeniere– Then came Cav. Arbib with some English friends, to see the pictures here– Mrs Curtis brought me more letters of introduction for India. Ola & Mr Somers Cocks came to lunch. At 2.30 Ola & I went out in gondola. Called on Lady Radnor, who had Mr (Dodo) Benson with her the late Archbishop’s son, whom I had last seen in Egypt in 1895. Then I went to bid adieu to Mr & Mrs Curtis—& on to see Mrs Merrick Hotel d’Europe—& so to the Giudecca to the Eden’s garden. Found there Olga Mocenigo & Miss Simpson. Came away very soon & paid the Genl another short visit as I felt I must see him again. He kissed my hand affly on parting– I ran in for a few minutes to see Mrs Brown who was in a wheel chair & seemed very well tho’ complaining that it was a whole month since her accident & she could not walk yet! That after having broken her thigh bone at 86!! I took leave of her & hurried home & found Olga Mocenigo & Mr Hulton waiting for me. Others came in Baroness Kuhn, Miss Williams, I. Belmondo, Aspasie Kwekwitsch, Mrs Hulton & her girl. When they were all gone I did accounts & paid bills &c till dinner time. Ola & Malagola dined with me & I came to bed at ten pretty well tired out & must go to sleep now.
