10 January 1906 — Lucknow
Wednesday. 10th [January 1906]. At 12 o’cl we drove over to the Residency & there met Col. Mansel– We found an old man in charge there who had been through the siege & who was delighted to explain the whole thing to us. I think it a terribly depressing sight & to hear all the horrors of that time—how the women & children were killed or died & of all the sufferings endured—but there is a comic note in everything & it was here supplied by the old guide who said “In that room was born my elder brother’s son. I was not married myself being at that time only 20 years old.” He was so proud of this little piece of personal history that he repeated the information several times. We expressed our admiration & went on our round. The inspection of this Residency with our guide’s explanation of the details of the siege was more interesting to Col. M. than to us who are ignorant of military matters—but one could not fail to understand & wonder how our people managed to hold out as the enemy’s guns were planted just across the high road. In the afternoon Nela & I drove to see the Imambara—& admired the great hall with its wonderful ceiling—also the tomb of which is extraordinary bad taste—a curious mixture eastern & European decoration in garden butting to it.
