11 January 1906 — Lucknow
Thursday. 11th [January 1906]. We took the 8.40 train for Cawnpore arriving there at 10. Drove off to see the Well—the scene of the terrible massacre. It stands in the midst of a beautiful garden– No natives are allowed in & Ajoo our bearer had to get off the box of the carriage which drove us to the foot of the mount on wh stands the monument. A gardener came & opened the gate of the wall wh enclosed the well & then retired. The great angel the work of Marachetti is decidedly fine as it stands with folded wings & arms over the well mouth. I laid some violets at its feet & we turned sadly away. As we drove out of the garden we picked up Ajoo & drove to the Jimna to see the Ghat where so many of the women & children (English) were shot down—& thence to the Church where there are many monuments to the slain. Then we drove back to the station & got our lunch there. While waiting for the train we saw some milk & cream cans being moved & prepared for the train. One cream tin was overturned, burst open & much cream was spilled on the platform. At which 2 coolies went on their knees & with their hands scooped up the cream to the last drop & replaced it into the tin! We got back at 3.30 to Lucknow.
