12 January 1906 — Lucknow
Friday. 12th [January 1906]. Henry Guest arranged to take us round the city & its bazaars on an elephant so we set off in a carriage with him abt 12 & drove to a street near the Imambara where we found one waiting for us. I got up on one side & H.G. with Nela on the other & the great beast set off thro’ the narrow streets. The houses are so near that from where we sat we were on a level with the 1st floors & could see right into the rooms– They seem to contain no furniture & to be quite poor abodes– Girls sat on some of the balconies looking down on the crowds below—the upper stories seemed often to be shops reached from the street by a stairs—some of the houses were mere facades—some had a story falling into decay. On went our elephant, nearly filling the narrow street. Happily we met few horses or vehicles—& so we went on to the brass bazaar where the low shops were full of lotas & brass vessels of all sorts. We stopped before one & Henrys chuprassie handed us up some of the wares to inspect. Of course the prices asked were exhorbitant but the chuprassie got us what we wanted at the proper price & we went on– Sometimes we met an ekka drawn by a poney who became terrified at our huge animal. The driver flew to his head & covering the pony’s eyes with his hand led him quickly past us. On getting back to where we had left our carriage we dismounted from the elephant & returned to the bungalow to lunch. Later Nela & I went for a drive round by Alune Bagh.
