5 March 1906 — Grimsthorpe, Nuwara Eliya
Monday. 5th [March 1906]. Nela & I went for a walk before lunch leaving Barbara happy gossiping with her physician. We went to the village & bought tortoise shell paper cutters to sell for the benefit of the hospital– Also went to get money at the National Bk of India. A most amusing youth attended to us—& was most unconventional. On thanking him for his attention to our wants he said he only wished our business had been larger & extended over a month! When I made some remarks as to the large rate of exchange taken by the banks he said “I suppose you complain. I am used to complaints.” I assured him I did not complain tho’ in my heart & pocket I felt the loss. All right, he said, good bye. Did accounts with Nela & B took us round her garden & had plants dug up for us to take away & we had to superintend the packing of them– Nela made up a parcel for me to send on to England & I hope to get mine to Venice—but it is forbidden to introduce plants into Italy so I may not be successful. B. took us after tea for a drive over the pass of & back. Very picturesque & charming view looking from the other side. Mrs Travers dined. I played Halma with B & she beat me.
