29 March 1906 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 29th [March 1906]. A long interview with Cav. Arbib in the morning. He had sent me a letter from a Mr Newgass to read re V.&M. Co which I told him not to answer as I considered it very insolent. Mr Williamson came for a few moments to say that Palazzo Gradenigo was to be let & to ask me to recommend it to friends. Rietti the antiquarian came to salutare me—so all my morng was taken up. After lunch I sent the gondola for Canon Ragg & we went together to meet Mr Hulton at the house of the Sailor’s inst. to see abt arranging it for the new manager. I brought the Canon back to tea and he stayed a long time talking parrochial talk. He seems a really nice conciliatory man. Elisabeth came again to dine with me & we had much talk over old times. Her life must have been an unhappy one & her spirit seems broken. Her husband was a very bad man– She of course does not let that be seen. She has a good son & also a daughter good & happy which is a help to her. What a different fate we 2 women who knew each other young have had. I with such a good husband & such tender care she—! Iduna fetched her away at 10 & she leaves Venice tomorrow–
