3 May 1906 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 3rd [May 1906]. At last the weather seems settled & we have a clear bright sky so Capt. Kerr took me to see the “Drake” wh is anchored at the end of the sea walls by Tre Parti. We went first to Hotel Europe & picked up the Capt.’s 2 sisters Lady Strafford (& her girl) & Miss Mona Kerr & from there went in the Adl’s steam barge. It took us abt ¾ hour. Perfectly smooth water. The huge sea monster stood up grim & hideous dark grey—& apparently a floating mass of machinery. What would its name sake Sir Francis Drake have said, had he been told such a ship would have had his name. The Adl’s cabins were not even fine in size—tho’ they were high. We steamed back to Europe by 12.30 & the Capt. & I walked to the traghetto S. Angelo & were ferried across just in time for lunch. I did not go out again. At 4.30 the Adl Prince Louis of Battenberg & the Princess & her son & daughter came to tea. She had been here twelve years ago with her sister the Gd Duchess Serge of Russia– The Gd Duke was also of the party—& has now been murdered! I gave the Battenberg’s tea & showed them round the pictures. Prince Louis & Prince Alexandré seemed mostly to care for them. They stayed about an hour. After they were gone came other visitors & lastly Sister Chaffey to talk over hospital business—this took me till past the hour for dressing for dinner– We were 10 altogether—the Capt., I & 8 middies. They all went out directly after dinner & I to bed–
