17 July 1906 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 17th [July 1906]. It appears that Guggenheim’s young gondolier was drowned last night just within sight of this house last night during the Serenata. I went to see Guggenheim yesterday to tell him our Queen would like him to have a leggio made for her like mine– I saw the youth then & remarked what a good looking lad he was. I find also that he was my 2nd gondolier for a little while last year. He either lost his balance & fell from the poppe & could not swim or else he had a fit. I got some clay & began to model a sketch of an angel kneeling wh I want to make to put into the niche of the old Portuguese bed I have downstairs. Went out at 4.30 to the Piazza whence I walked home by the Rialto—saw & bought an Aosta hair Rosella parraquet wh seems tame & whistles. Mr & Mrs Humphrey Johnston dined with me. In the evening the Misses Phillpotts & Aspasie Kwekwitsch came but did not stay late. At 1.30 I was woke by music & looking out found a large boat full of ladies & gentlemen who were serenading friends in the house next me in the Rio S. Polo. It was a pretty sight. The singing was not wonderful but the effect pretty. The Canal was quite quiet—the steamers had ceased running. The night was lovely. It seemed almost a pity to return to one’s bed.
