25 October 1906 — Rome | |
Thursday. 25th [October 1906]. Breakfast in my room & went to the garden where I found Lady E. sitting in the ilex avenue working. We were there joined by Sir Edwin & some of the secretaries. I find they are Lord Lascelles, Mr Phipps, Mr Cheetham, & Mr Halitet—all nice youths. Enquired by telephone at the Hotel Beau Site & found that Kate & Cecil with Eda & Monty arrived there yesterday on their autumn holiday. The Egertons were very kind to them & asked them to dine twice & then Emily who plays the piano remarkably well got Monty to play duetts with her on two pianos which was a great success. They read off at sight most difficult symphonies of Schumann, Brahms &c. We breakfasted in our own rooms every day. Lunched at 12.30 to wh meal once came Barèse the French Ambassador who speaks English without accent having been brought up in England. The Austrian ambassador who has the same talent, Count Lutzow came another day. It is curious to find two Ambassadors of foreign powers who for their tongue might pass for English. Miss Everitt the housekeeper always lunched with us. She had been nursery governess to the Egerton boy now at school. Lady Egerton’s oldest boy by her first husband was staying with her but went back to his school in Switzerland after 2 or 3 days. He has quite the Russian type of his parents. Every day after lunch Olga took me out for a drive– One day she lent me the carriage to take out Kate & Eda & we went up to the Villa Pamphili the road to which is always a delight for the magnificent views over Rome– I saw often the Cassis whose house in the Via Gaeta is close to the Embassy. They have lately bought it and are busy furnishing & arranging it. | |
