28 October 1906 — Rome
Sunday. 28th October [1906]. I accompanied Sir Edwin to the American Church the Church in Via Babuino not being open. Dr Nevin the old American clergyman is lately dead to the great regret of his many friends. He was a clever man & had a wonderful power of getting money from his friends for the decoration & building of his church wh is a fine thing. He had fine mosaics made at Venice for it on Burne Jones cartoons—& left money in his will for the completion of them. He died while out on a hunting expedition in Mexico from the bite of insects. He was a curious character half worldly, half religious—fond of fine things & good cheer. I used to think him rather fanatical—but I believe he was a good man. Sir E. & Lady Egerton dined out tonight so I went to dine with the Aldersons at the Beau Site & we had a long evening of gossip about all our family of which I had little news for more than a year. It is good to be amongst one’s own again.
