2 November 1906 — Rome | |
Friday. 2nd November [1906]. Sir Edwin went to the races at Pisa & did not return till Monday. On Sunday 4th I went in the carriage to the English church in Via Babuino– In the afternoon Lady E. & I went to join the Aldersons who under the direction of Revd Mr Bannister were going to the Aventine to see a [illegible word] of Benedictines of all nations lately built & the Superior of wh is now the Pope’s Confessor & therefore considered the most important person in Europe. The Service had just begun as we arrived there & we had to wait till it was finished & then Mr Bannister saw the Superior & he took us down to the Crypt over which everyone went into ecstacies but which appeared to me very bad taste. Neither is the church well proportioned the pillars being too heavy for what they have to carry. The view from the garden towards Frascati are lovely. We went on to the villa of the Knights of the Order of Malta which is far more interesting. After ringing to ask for admittance we were told to look through the keyhole of the gate—& the view is curious; at the end of a long dark alley, one sees the dome of St Peters. The view over Rome from the terrace is splendid. The house is interesting & contains pictures (bad ones) of different Knights & the gallery on the 1st floor is a long interesting room with old furniture. The house is never lived in now, but only used as a place to spend a few hours in. The old Roman garden with alleys of evergreens clipped & shaped is charming. One would like to spent the rest of ones days in such a place. | |
