5 November 1906 — Rome | |
Monday. 5th [November 1906]. Today Olga drove me to see the Villa Mattei another of those charming villas almost in Rome just behind the Colliseum. The garden is larger than that we saw yesterday & there are many interesting Roman remains, statues &c. The views are also charming. Sir Edwin having returned from Pisa last night we all 3 went to dine with Ct & Css Czernin at the Austrian Embassy. He, as one of the secs has rooms in the Palazzo Venezia. We went up an interminable number of steps. We met only Lord Lascelles & Mr Phipps & had a pleasant evening. Countess Czernin is a daughter of Lord Grimsthorpe & a very handsome & charming young woman. Her grandmother Mrs Leigh (US) was also at the dinner. Css Czernin was at Venice some time this summer & I saw her several times. | |
