6 November 1906 — Rome
Tuesday. 6th November [1906]. The Cassis called at 10 & took Olga & me to Viterbo in their motor car. It is a comfortable carriage wh can be closed at will. We have had such stormy showery weather these last days that we were fortunate in having a fine, if not very bright, day. The views of the Campagna as we went along were lovely. The road itself was rather bare & uninteresting till we got towards the top of the hill wh overlooks the town of Viterbo. There is there a beautiful lake—& trees on the sides of the hills. Once we punctured a tire & had to stop while the driver put on a new one wh took about 20 minutes. We reached Voltura (wh is about 60 kilom. from Rome) about 12. It is most picturesque with its many towers there reminding one of San Gimignano. We ordered some lunch at an hotel wh seemed quite decent—& went to see the Palace of the Commune & to look at the quaint houses & streets. After our lunch we took another walk to visit the Cathedral & the remains of the Palace of the Popes who used often to come there. It is being repaired & some of the buildings that had encroached on it are being removed. There are many fine palaces at Viterbo & picturesque balconies. After this we drove on to Bagnisia to see the Villa Lante—a most charming place with fine garden & fountains & ilex trees. Some of the family were at home but they sent us permission to go round the garden. The villa is divided into 2 kinds of lodges at each side of the formal garden—wh cannot be very comfortable for ordinary life. From there we went straight back to Rome passing thro’ the town & got back safely to Rome about 6 P.M.
