14 November 1906 — Stupinigi Palace, Turin
Wednesday. 14th [November 1906]. We sat working after lunch as usual when the Queen suddenly left the room & returned with her arms full of parcels wh proved to contain presents for Baroness Sormino, Css Trotti & myself. She gave me a pair of lovely little dark blue enamel vases delicately painted—wh she had brought from Bourg during her late trip in France. In the afternoon we took a walk with H.M. in the woods near the Castle. They were planted for the shooting & hunting of the R. family but have long since been sold & only the Villa is now R. property. It was pretty wet under food & foggy overhead– After dinner I helped Mimi with her gilding of acorns & making of paper butterflies for the Queen’s Christmas trees of wh she told me she has 6 or 7 every year for her household, servants, friends, dependents, schools &c. The Queen suddenly produced a basket & called on us all to take tickets in a lottery. All present having tickets we drew a piece of jewelry—wh proved to be those she had bought of me. She said to me that the brooch I had drawn was to be for my niece as she knew I did not want it. She was as happy as a girl over the little surprise & we finished the evening very gaily.
