15 November 1906 — Stupinigi Palace, Turin
Thursday. 15th [November 1906]. Marchesa Villamarina visited me to say H.M. hearing I intended to leave for Paris on Saturday begged me to remain until Monday that I might accompany her on an expedition on Saturday to S. Martino di Alfiere wh I am glad to do. Today after lunch (2 o’cl ) we started in 3 motor cars for Turin. H.M., Signor Colombo & I in one, the Villamarinas & suite in the other two. We drove to the Museum to visit the Egyptian collection wh is a very valuable one. In former days it was the best in Europe & then lost very much—till a year or two ago the present King sent an expedition at his own expense & the present Director Sr Scamparellia was particularly fortunate in finding the tomb of an Engineer & his wife intact. Besides the mummies it contained all the furniture of the pair & also food, pomades, needles, measures, clothes &c. We spent 3 hours going over the Museum & examining them. The poor mummies so ruthlessly torn from their tombs always fill me with compassion & all we ladies were of opinion that tho’ they had been dead 4000 years still they ought to be decently buried! We came back to Stupinigi glad of rest & tea as it had been very cold at the Museum. Baroness Sonnino left the Castle after tea to return to Florence. She is a very active woman—the Queen said that her only fault was that “Elle veut ce qu’elle veut” so much that there is no withstanding her. She soon learnt to make bead rosaries—much to her satisfaction.
