17 January 1907 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 17th [January 1907]. Nellie & Charlie came to stay a night. I went at 8 to the Ch. Army quarters to see Mr Jemmett about a man as manager of the Venice Sailor’s Institute. Interviewed a man Johnson who seems likely. Walked on to Portman Square & saw Lady Maxwell Lyte who promised to give me a drawing of hers for my sale next month. On to Nellie’s house in Seymour St now let to Mrs Walrond whom I found at home. Since I had seen her Mr Walrond has died– We had a very sad talk. Today was the anniversary of his death. Poor woman. She has no children & is very lonely. They were a devoted couple. I came home to tea at 5. The Wylds brought a Mr Duncan to dinner one of Charlie’s co-directors at Fortnum & Masons & they all 3 went off to a ball. There are terrible accounts in today’s papers of an earthquake in the W. Indies wh has destroyed Kingston & killed amongst others Sir James Fergusson. Abt 1000 killed.
