12 May 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 12th May [1907]. Princess Taxis, Nelly & I went to morning service. Asked by telephone about Maria C. Heard the poor thing is a little better. I went out in gondola with the Princess, Connie & Netty after 5 o’cl tea. We happened to get before the R. Palace just as the King was expected & he passed in his steam barge escorted by 2 large club boats ([illegible word]). He had been to give away the prizes at the Gimnastic conferences at St Elena. The whole town is alive with children & youths come from all parts of the country to perform their gimnastic exercises. The steamers on the canal are crowded, it is difficult to move in the streets & Venice is en fête. The Bessboroughs arrived by the train deluxe from London (Edward, Blanche & Gweneth). They were in this house soon after 7 p.m. having left London yesterday morng at 10. We dined at 8 & just as were finishing dinner we heard that the King was passing on his way to the station & we all rushed to the Belvedere to see him. Bengal lights were burning. H.M. was in gondola & escorted by the Buenitori. The procession passed rapidly leaving us in darkness. He has left by special train. There was a “serenata” going on wh all our party but Blanche & I went to see. I am glad that Gweneth should have these sights to see on her first arrival. The heat continues.
