14 May 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 14th [May 1907]. Breakfasted with the Bessboros & Miss Hallé at 9 after wh Edward took out Gweneth sight seeing. Seck: & Pss Taxis breakfasted in their rooms & went out early—the rest of us stayed indoors & idled away the morning. After lunch we had a visit from Lady Stewart & Miss Chapman whose father Spencer Chapman has brought his yacht here. I set to work to type out the programs for the trios to be played here tomorrow evening. At 4 I started out with the Bessboro’ family for the Giudecca & showed them over the hospital– Miss Chaffey gave us tea in her sitting room & we were joined by the rest of our party Pss Taxis, Connie, Miss Hallé & Sr Malagola– Seck: had gone off sketching– We afterwards adjourned to the Eden’s garden where I left them & returned to settle some details of business with Chaffey. I paid a visit to a patient of the home & Mrs Balfour—a beautiful young woman. Also to a German sailor who is seriously ill. We got home about 7 o’cl & had just time to dress for dinner at 7½. In the evening there was my usual weekly reception wh was well attended by travellers & Venetian friends. Lady Helen Vincent came immensely admired & looking more beautiful than ever. Gweneth was also admired. I received a telegram today from Cornelia Sarabji & her sister will arrive here tomorrow from India. Lady Gregory on Thursday– I hardly know how I shall house them all! The weather, still hot, is cooler & very pleasant. The papers say that our Queen will be here on 23rd on her way from Greece—& the Queen Margherita in a few days– The King of Spain also– Venice is gay!
