16 May 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 16th [May 1907]. There had been a little rain in the night & it is much cooler today. Breakfast at 9 & then I went out in gondola with Edward & the 2 Sarabjis to the V. & Murano shop at San Vio where we met Arbib & saw the glass & the Antiquities to be sold there. Thence to the Piazza that the Sarabjis should get their first view of the place—& of S. Marks & then home to lunch. After lunch sent off all the party except Blanche to Murano to see the glass blowing & bead making under Arbib’s care. Blanche insisted on my lying down for a short rest & then at 4 she & I went out in gon: to call on Ersilia Canevaro & her sister whom I found far better than I had expected—tho’ looking very ill. Ersilia was very agitated, as well she may be poor thing. On leaving them we went to the Piazza where we happened to meet Malagola. He took us to see the building of the new campanile wh at last is being gone on with. The Commission having ordered that the bricks shall be soaked in water to get out the salt in them! they have made a huge kind of bath into wh they are first to be put! We went & sat at Florian’s & had granita & came home abt 6.30, having had a pleasant quiet afternoon. The rest of the party came home abt 7 very pleased with their expedition. Dined at 8. In eveng Blanche & Gweneth went to Lady Radnors, Malagola having looked in he & Cornelia Sar: went also out in gondola with them– The rest played bridge so I came off to bed, being very tired. Nora H. came & sat in my room & talked till abt 10 when Lady Gregory arrived to stay. We had a cup of tea together & she went to bed & I to sleep.
