17 May 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 17th May [1907]. After lunch Edward & I had a field day with furniture & worked at making the long hall more compatible. Most of the party under the guidance of Malagola visited the Fiori—S. Rocco. I remained at home. The morning went, I know not how! After Edward & I had arranged the hall we went out in gon: to do a little more shopping & suddenly remembered that we had promised to go to tea with the Montalbas—so he & I rushed off to them & had a pleasant little visit. It was a very windy day tho’ not cold. E. & I returned home before 6 as I had promised to be ready at 6 to go out with Baroness Reinelt—found a telephonic message to say she could not go. Ct Seck. & Pss Taxis were in having a visit from Iduna Belmondo– I met her at the door just leaving so I took the 2 former out with me & we went to San Moisé. I paid first a visit to the Reinelt & found her surrounded with friends. She was afraid of going in gondola on account of the wind. I went to join my party at Florians & found them with Malagola. The great excitement in Piazza was the King of Spain who was in a shop. People were standing on chairs to see him pass. I believe he is a very ordinary looking individual in European dress! The Sarabjis were much stared at & on the Rialto rather mobbed when walking there with Nora Hallé—as from the Piazza the party divided & went in different directions– Blanche & I walked home by Rialto. There was a thunderstorm during the evening & the wind quite felt. Gweneth was dressed by the Sarabjis in their costume for dinner & looked very lovely. Some played bridge—others sang & played piano or chatted & so the evening passed till bed time. I wrote letters & went to bed very late & very tired having been constantly on the go since 9 a.m.
