22 May 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 22nd [May 1907]. Poor little Aimée Cariati came at 10.30 & told me all her grief—& sobbed & clung to me. Poor child! she is still young to have so much to bare, but happily has 2 good sons to help her. Afterwards I went out in gon: with Edward & we looked in to the Sailor’s Institute & then home to lunch. The new man Royon did not very favorably impress Edward who thought him inclined to be uppish. Directly after lunch I took Gweneth to see Angela Reinelt who admired her greatly. Back home & Edward & I went out together to the Hospital where he gave some useful hints as to regulations. The matron said a new difficulty had arisen by the surgeon Dr Giordano wishing that the relatives of his patients should also been taken in, a thing impossible to be done. After talking it all over we left & looked into the Eden’s garden that Edward might take leave of them. The roses were out in profusion & it was a beautiful sight. There were many people calling there so we did not stay long. Blanche had gone to see the Exhibition of pictures with Connie. We settled to go out to the Piazza in the evening to hear the band play. Sr Malagola came at 9 to accompany us. Giuseppe came up with a long face to say our gondola had been stolen, since 8 o’cl & now it was only 9! It had been tied up before the door with all its furniture & had been seen by Giuseppe at 5 mins: to 8. When the gondoliers returned from their dinner at 8.30 it was gone! We ladies went 5 in the gondola which the Bessboros’ had hired—the 2 men walked & we went to the Piazza which was hot & crowded & we got a table quite at the back—so we did not remain there but came home early.
