23 May 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 23rd [May 1907]. Our gondola still absent but the alarm has been given. Breakfast at 8 & at 8.45 I accompanied the Bessboro’ party to the station for their start by the train deluxe for Paris. They had all sorts of trouble there—on first arriving we were met by Giuseppe saying there was a difficulty about registering the luggage. When this was settled G. found out that one of the boxes had been registered with someone else’s luggage & it had to be found & fished out of the train– The train was a very long one & there were a great many travellers so that it started ten minutes late. Sr Malagola had come down to take leave of the party & when they had started I took him back in Blanche’s gondola. On getting near home a gondolier told us that my gondola had been found & there it was at the door, carpetless & with the Cavalli gone. It had been found at the traghetto of the Municipio & brought back by the vigili. I sent Giuseppe off with it to the squero & it was reckoned that 175 lire would hardly cover the damage done. The thieves had begun to unscrew the iron prow but had not succeeded in getting it off. I spent the rest of the morning in arranging my papers & letters wh were in sad disorder. After tea I went with Connie & Nora in the patched up gondola to the Piazza where Connie made some small purchases. After dinner Connie went to Lady Radnor’s to sing Glees– Nora & I played patience & went early to bed.
