10 June 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 10th [June 1907]. Malagola & his son came to see me after lunch, the father to say he was going on a short holiday & leaves tonight. Guido to ask if I know Pierpont Morgan as he wanted to see the Director of the N.Y. Museum who was supposed to be staying on board Morgan’s yacht with him. I offered to take Guido to the “Corsair” to see whether Mrs Burns (Morgan’s sister) is on board—so we went off at 4 in gondola– On getting to the Corsair we found that Mrs Burns was not on board so we returned having made a useless journey. At 6 I went out in gondola with Angela—returned home just in time to dress & hurry off to dine with the Curtis. Only Canon & Mrs Ragg were there. Had a pleasant quiet evening. The dear old couple Curtis—she so stately & quiet—in their fine old house with the great salon decorated for the Barbaro family by Vittorio sculptures—all this is a thing apart—& refreshing to the soul in these days of bustle. The Curtis are also highly cultivated people—omnivorous readers & have travelled much. Mrs Curtis is the daughter of an English Admiral Wormeley– Mr C. comes from Boston but has left his country many years since. It is said that once he was travelling in a train at Boston & was insulted by another man. Curtis at once pulled his opponent’s nose! who brought an action against him—with the result that he was condemned to pay a large fine. On his refusing to do this he had to go to prison for a term. Curtis preferred to do this & then left America shaking the dust off his feet & vowing never more to return to his country.
