16 June 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 16th June [1907]. Went to morning service. After lunch Canon Ragg came to see me & we wrote out all the invitations to the English & Americans I am to ask to my party on Tuesday next “to meet the Bishop of Gibraltar.” At 6 Angela called for me and took me in gondola to Ponte della Paglia where we embarked on a Lido steamer. Arrived at Lido we went in the tram to the bathing platform and waited until Genl & Css Rossini arrived & Sr Fritz (Angela’s nephew). They arrived soon after 7 & we sat & talked & watched others dine till 8 when we ourselves dined. Clouds had gathered & there was much lightening so we dined in the big restaurant room & started back soon after 9. The steamer was very full as the people go out to spend the day at the Lido. It has become quite a different place to when I first knew it. Villas have sprung up & immense hotels in every direction. At S. Elizabetta the vines & little canals are disappearing & a huge machine is at work draining the land where a new quarter is to be built. In fact the place is fast becoming a watering place—the sands are covered with long rows of cabins wh are hired out to bathers & the Co wh lets them has acquired the right to prevent any one going down to the side of the sea in front of them! I would never go near the place now if I had my choice. The Venetians like it & are proud of it as it now is, but it is now no longer the Lido of the time of Byron.
