20 June 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 20th June [1907]. The Bishop & Mrs C. went to an early service at 8—on their return they breakfasted & we started off to church again for a morning service at 10. The Bp then consecrated the new window in memory of the poet Browning wh has just being put up by subscription. Directly the service was over I took the Bishop off to the Arbib’s house where we had been invited to the wedding of Matilde Arbib with a jew of Tripoli one Nahum. We arrived too late to see more than the end of the ceremony wh took place in one of the smallest rooms so that one cd hardly get in. Directly the rabbi retired there was much kissing of the bride & bridegroom & amongst all the near relations. In one room the presents were exhibited, in others refreshments were served. Cav. Arbib showed the Bishop round the house & garden & then we left the festive house & went home for him to get a rest. He & Mrs Collins went out again to lunch with the Raggs & afterwards to see the Sailor’s Institute. After tea I took them out for a quiet row in gondola. It was a lovely hot evening. We went up the canal by the Canareggio out round the Fondata Nuove—Arsenal—to S. Pietro in Castillo. We went into the Cathedral wh is very large & in bad taste. The campo was as quiet & empty as a country village green. We came back by the Gardini & grand canal home to dinner. The Collins enjoyed the beauty & quiet & rest of the gita. Mr Brown, Mr Woods, Mr Hulton & the Raggs dined with us in order to take leave of the Bishop he leaves at cockcrow tomorrow. I also took leave of them as it will be too early for me to be up their train leaving at 7.20.
