25 June 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 25th [June 1907]. I had a tiresome morning trying to enamel. The stove would not heat properly, the enamels would not firm, the solder would not soften & altogether I lost much time. Sra Malagola & her cousin Teresina came in while I was at work. The former unhappy at the infidelity of her husband & his bad temper. I had never seen that side of his character as he is always kind & “serviable” to me & my friends. She is a good & gentle & loveable woman & I am very sorry for her. I sent later to ask her to go out with me in gondola so as to cheer her a bit & we went out after tea for a row. Genl & Mrs Hatton & Mrs Wright, a pretty American dined with me—& a few people came in the evening. It was a lovely night. Q. Margherita was expected to arrive here after midnight this eveng but so late that I could not wait up to illuminate the inside of the house as is the custom here.
