26 June 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 26th [June 1907]. At 10.30 I went off to the Public Gardens to meet Angela Reinelt, her friend Srs Coonvitch of Trieste & her nephew Sr Fritz. I found them there and we went over the Exhibition of modern pictures. The prime mover & manager of it all L’Onorivat Fradeletto was there & joined us. He condescended to go round with us pointing out the “case stupende” as he constantly called what was to my mind very inferior works. He did not like any objections to any picture or any appeal to his judgment so I discreetly held my peace & merely accepted his dictum. I thought most of the works very bad & a terrible impressionist mania now prevails wh apparently does away with the necessity for correct drawing. The Italian schools were less violently bad—the Russian the most startlingly horrible! We were tired out mind & body by one o’cl when we came out of the building & went to lunch at the restaurant in the gardens. At 2 we started home again. I went to the Royal Palace to write my name on the Queen on the way home. At 6 Angela called for me again & took me to the Public gardens again. I dined hurriedly at 8 & joined by Sra Malagola & her cousin Teresa went to the Sailor’s Inst: to the weekly concert. There was no “talent” amongst the men but an American lady & gentleman did the singing. It was a lovely warm night so after the concert we went round by the Giudecca Canal & the Grand Canal before returning home.
