6 July 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 6th [July 1907]. I went off to take my sea bath soon after 8 in gondola with Baker my maid & after that spent a somewhat idle day not being in the mood for work. I went at 4, called at the Palace for Dss Sforza and took her out for a row. We went to the Montalbas that she might see Clara’s studio. Clara was invisible not being well but Ellen showed the drawings. From here we went a round by the Maritime port & back by the Grand Canal– The Duchess is kindly & pleasant, but not over clever. I dropped her at the Palace & then went to fetch Angela & took her to the P. gardens. Yesterday there had been proclaimed a general strike & she had been very nervous while out with me. I encouraged her & really there was no danger & no strike—only the bakers having struck for 12 hours out of compliment to a strike going on at Ferrara!! On my return from the gardens I dined & did not go out again. There was a thunderstorm in the evening.
