12 July 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 12th [July 1907]. It appears that H.M. left Venice this morng at 5 a.m. & went to Mestre where her motor car was awaiting her. She goes as far as Stresa-Lago Maggiore today. I went off to my bath at Lido. It was quite cold going there before 8 when I started. On my return I had not time to rest as poor Arbib came at 11. He was very disturbed and said he would have liked to ask me to get Baroness Reinelt to lend money (£10,000) on his property. I said I would see what was to be done but had little hope. I thought about it & almost resolved to go & ask her– I even went out at 4 with the intention of going to her to ask her—but courage failed for I feared the uselessness so I only went to Piazza & back. Ersilia Canevaro came to see me– She seems quieter & to be getting over the shock of her sister’s suicide. At 6.30 Angela called for me & on the way to the Gardens in gondola I sounded her on the question of the money & she laughed at the idea so I quickly turned it off. I had bothered over it all day & was not sorry to have settled the question.
