13 July 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 13th [July 1907]. To Lido as usual—the weather unsettled & chilly. I had a letter from Bessborough saying he has done thro’ the Ottoman Bank all he can for Arbib & has bought from him for me all his shares in the Venezia Murano Co and that he was in hopes that he had been able to help the house of Arbib to go thro’ the crisis. About 11 o’cl he came to see me to hear about it & was dreadfully upset. He was just leaving the room when he turned & seizing my hand said “Good bye, don’t forget me”– I pulled him back into the room & begged him to rest a moment for I feared he was going to faint. I left him alone to be quiet & went & ordered him a cup of strong black coffee wh I made him drink & then talked quietly to him till he was calmed & recovered. Poor man, he kept saying his good name was gone & from having been the happiest of men he had suddenly become the most miserable. I told him that the worst was now over & the shock was now over & that plenty of hard work would be good for him & he had much work before him. He left me calmed & more able to begin life again. It had been a trying thing to me & I felt much unhinged. I wrote some letters but was not able to do much all day. I went out at 6 in gondola with Angela at 6 to the gardens—not having much spirit in me—& went early to bed after dinner.
