4 August 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 4th [August 1907]. Very hot. Bath & afterwards took Sister Kate to church. Afternoon had a visit from a Mr Tonks introduced by Mr Sargent R.A. also an artist. Went to see the Arbibs & told him of the proposal of the Banca Veneta as to my signature. He is very grateful & relieved & says now his own affairs will be settled—so I suppose I shall have to do it but I must see the lawyer—get an answer from London about it. I sent the gondola at 7 to fetch Mr Paterson the clergyman who has come to take Canon Ragg’s duty. He arrived at 5 A.M. was in church at 8, again at 10.30 a.m. Then at 5.30 & now I took him to the Sailor’s institute where he held a service. He is a student of Henry’s Assyrian discoveries & was very interested to talk to. On my return from the Institute abt 9 p.m. I was so tired I went straight to bed.
