6 August 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 6th [August 1907]. Mrs Benson wife of an American artist & mother of Miss Fletcher, the writer was buried today & Canon Ragg returned from the Cadore to conduct the funeral. I had never known the lady & tho’ she had lived here many years she had not gone at first into society & of later years had been in very bad health. When young she had left Mr Fletcher with Mr Benson & taken her young daughter with her. She afterwards married Mr B. but the mischief to her & her girl was irreparable. Many years after Miss F. was engaged to marry Lord Wentworth who threw her over & blighted her life. She is now an elderly woman—very stout & with hair dyed golden. I have only seen her once i.e. the eveng I gave a party a little while ago for the Bp of Gibraltar to which she came with Mr B. After the funeral the Canon came to lunch with me & I invited Mr Paterson to meet him. It was a very hot day. I took the Canon to see the Arbibs where I try to go every day to cheer them– In the eveng Mrs Stanier came & Mr Paterson & I persuaded the Canon to remain the night & not start off at 4 a.m. wh he settled to do.
