14 September 1907 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 14th [September 1907]. Charlie went off early to the V.M. & at 10 I took Nellie in gondola to join him– From there I took them into our church which impressed the Wylds very favorably. Also to Rubelli’s hard by to see the silk looms at work. At 11 we went to Mrs Curtis & she showed the Wylds her lovely palazzo & got home very tired & glad of lunch– Baron & Baroness Edmond Rothschild of Paris & their daughter called directly after lunch. They had just arrived here from Greece in their splendid yacht. At 3 the Wylds went out to do last jobs as they leave Venice tomorrow. I had several visits—Old Mrs Montagu née Monk, Miss Wilson, Capt. Sharpe & his sister & finally Mr & Mrs Davis who are living in what is called Desdemona’s Palace. When Charlie saw Mr D. he said he thought he is a man of queer reputation in business in the city. Mrs D. had a very handsome sister with her. There was rather amusing bye play. Mr D. said he has a fine collection of pictures in London & he opened it to the public every Sunday. I said I could not do so here as I should never have a moment’s peace in the house. Mrs D. said in a low tone—Monsieur Edmond you don’t always let people in either” at wh Mr D. shut his mouth tight & was dumb. She contradicted him once again abt some other thing & I forget what. At 6 we went out in gondola to see the Rothschild’s yacht wh is very large & beautiful. They were very kind & welcomed us cordially. They all leave tomorrow. It was stormy in the evening so there was no going out after dinner. Arbib came in for a short time to take leave of the Wylds. I took leave of them when they went to bed as they leave so early tomorrow morng it is of no use my being waked. They will go by the 7.20 train to Milan. My knee is a good deal better.
